Let there be light

◈ And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.(Ge1:3)

위 구절 앞부분 Let there be light.를 어떻게 분석할까?
종래 영문법으로는 불가능하지만 2진법영어로는 분석이 가능하다.
즉 1형을 안고 있는 5형의 모습이다. 아래에서 [ ]는 절이 문장의 요소가 되는 것을 나타낸다.

[5[1]]/ Let // there /[be」 light].
->[1] There be」 light.  [1]

안긴 문장의 술어역할을 하는 1형의 위치대명사 there가 안은 문장 5형의 목적어의 자리에 가 있음을 알 수 있다. 고쳐 쓰면 다음과 같다.

[5[1] / Let // light  / [be there].
->[1] Light / be there.

여기서 우리는 there ~ 구문의 1형을 발견하게 된다.

[1] There was」 light.
->[1] Light / was there.

도올 같은 5형식론자들은 there 없이  Light / was. 만으로 완전한 문장이 된다고 주장하지만 그러한 문장은 영어에서 존재하지 않는다.
Light was. 만으로는 불완전하므로 Light was there.-> There was light.와 같이 대명사 there가 보충된 것이다.

◈  And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night,(Ge1:14)

위 구절의 Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky.는 위의 예문과는 대조적으로 전치사구 in~이 술어로 사용된 것이다. 이 경우에는 there는 특별한 의미를 가지지 못하고 in~ 속에 포함된다.

[5[1]] / Let // there [be」 lights / in the expanse of the sky].
->[1] There be」 lights / in the expanse of the sky.
->[1] Lights be / (there) in the expanse of the sky.

다만 이 경우 Lights가 앞으로 나오는 문장을 널리 사용되지 않는다. there ~ 형식이 보편적으로 사용된다.

◈ God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.(Ge1:4)

(2[1]) God / saw // [that the light / was good].
->(2) God / saw // that...
->[1] The light / was good.

위 문장은 1형을 안은 2형으로 분석된다. 즉 that절이 안은 문장의 요소(목적어)로 된 것이다.

(4) He / separated // the light // from the darkness.
->(2) He / separated // the light.+ from the darkness.

위 문장은 2형에 전치사구가 기계적으로 합쳐진 것이다. 이 경우 전치사구 from the darkness 는 목적어 the light에 대한 술어가 아니다. 왜냐하면 "the light was from the darkness"라는 문장이 사용되지 않기 때문이다.

끝으로 요한복음 1장의 light 및 darkness와 관련된 표현들을 모아본다. 이들을 창세기 1장과 대조하면 삼위일체의 오묘한 이치를 알 수 있다.
