키워드도 모르고 영어를 한다?

우리나라 영어교육은 철저히 독해 위주이다.

대부분의 한국 사람들이 문어체 영어는(written English)는 그런 대로 좀 한다고 하지만 구어체 영어(spoken English)는 아예 포기하고 만다. 이는 키워드(이른바 '부사'와 '전치사')에 대한 이해가 제대로 되어있지 않는 데에 그 이유가 있다.  이 말이 의심스러우면 다음 예문들의 의미를 말해 보라.

두 자리 문장

(be on about)

① He / was on about the book.

① What are you / on about V?

① I didn't know [what he was on about ∨]. It didn't make sense.

세 자리 문장

(babble on about~)

③ He kept [babbling / on about his mission].

(bang on about)

③ The Prime Minister / was banging / on about political reform.

③ You know that boxing title <you keep [/banging /on about ∩]>?

(bluster on about~)

③He / was blustering / on about [how bad Bertha's memory is].

(drone on about)

다음에는 위 각 문장에 대한 해석이 나오게 된 이유를 말해 보라.

이 두 가지 답변이 모두 가능한 독자는 굳이 이 책을 읽을 필요가 없다.

그렇지 못한 독자들을 위해 위 예문들의 공통분모인 ‘on about~’의 의미를 알려 드리고자 한다. 그 해답은 on ‘계속하다’와 about~ ‘~에 관하여’를 합한 복합전치사구 on about~의 의미 즉 ‘~에 관해 계속하다’라는 의미에서 찾을 수 있다.  그리고 ‘~관하여 ‘계속’할 수 있는 동작으로는  ‘말하다’라는 의미가 대표적이다. 위 ‘on about~’와 결합한 동사들은 모두 ‘말하다’와 관련된 의미를 나타내는 예문을 모은 것이다.
그러므로 사전에서 위 동사들의 의미를 찾지 않더라도 대략적인 해석이 가능하다.
