2. 2진법으로 영어를 본다

◇  영어사전 없이 영어를 배운다?

문형을 알면 영어사전만 가지고도 영어를 배울 수 있다. 그러나 문형을 모르면 사전을 제대로 찾을 수 없다. 사전에는 하나의 단어에 수 십 개의 풀이가 있는 경우가 있다. 이 경우 문형에 관한 지식 없이 사전을 찾는 것은 불가능하거나 무의미한 일이다.
어떤 문장에 쓰이는 단어의 뜻을 사전에서 정확히 골라내는 것은 기초적이면서도 매우 중요한 일이다. 그런데도 우리나라 영어교육 현장에서는 사전 찾는 방법조차 제대로 가르치고 있지 않다. 이는 마치 사전 없이 영어를 배우라고 하는 것과 같다. 번역에서 발견되는 많은 오류는 단어의 정확한 의미를 사전에서 제대로 찾지 못하고 엉뚱한 의미를 갖다 붙이는 데서 일어난다.
영화 While you were sleeping의 대사 일부에 문형표시를 하면 다음과 같다.

위에서 먼저 표시한 것은 2진법이고 다음에 표시한 것은 5형식에 의한 것이다. 5형식문형과 관계를 본다면 대략 P는 V, 문장 처음에 나오는 N은 S, P다음에 나오는 N은 O와 대응하나 그렇지 않는 것도 있다. 2진법문형은 한 개의 단어나 구로 된 것도 포함하므로 모든 문장을 커버할 수 있다. 어느 것이 간명해 보이는지 비교해 보라.

위 대사에 나온 단어는 중학생도 알고 있는 단어들이다. 다만, What gives?는 와 You stood me up.의 표현은 약간 생소해 보이지만 사전을  찾으면 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 문장이다. 두산동아 영한사전에 의하면 give 표제어 하에 What ~s (with) ? (구어) ...은 어찌된 일이냐, stand 표제어 하에 ~ a person up (2) ...데이트에서 바람맞히다 라는 풀이가 되어 있다. 이에 대해서는 1부 2장에서 자세히 설명하였다.
I had to eat your ticket. 표현은 3형식 문형이다. 직역하면 "나는 네 표를 먹어야 했어."가 된다. Lucy가 The Ice Capades에 나타나지 않아 Joe를 바람맞혔다면 결국 Joe가 Lucy의 Capades 아이스 쇼 입장표를 썩힌 것이므로 Joe는 "Lucy의 표를 까먹을 수밖에 없었다."고 불평하는 속어적 표현이 되는 것이다. 이는 우리나라 사람의 정서로도 공감이 가는 표현이다.

다음은 위 영화 대사 예문 전부를 국어로 번역한 것이다.
루씨:      누구세요?
조 주니어: 어떻게 된 거야?  나를 바람맞혔잖아.
루씨:      무슨 말이야?
조 주니어: 데이트 말이야.
루씨:      무슨 데이트?
조 주니어: Capades 아이스 쇼에 가기로 한 것. 그 입장표를 썩혔잖아?
루씨:      나는 너와 데이트 약속한 적이 없어.
조 주니어: 너 했잖아.

이처럼 위 문장은 문형을 알면 모두 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 것들이다. 그런데 지금까지도 "영어는 외국어니까 우리로서는 어찌할 수 없는 것이다. 무조건 외우는 수밖에 없다."는 생각이 우리 사회를 지배해 오고 있다. 과연 그러할까?
그렇지 않다. 문형을 제대로 알면 영어를 무조건 외울 필요는 전혀 없다. 문형을 알면 단어는 물론 숙어의 의미도 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 문형을 알면 영한사전만 가지고도 어떤 영문이든 쉽게 국어로 번역할 수 있다. 문형을 알면 영어사전만 가지고도 어떤 국문이든 영역할 수 있다. 영어회화는 더 말할 것도 없다. 영어에 있어서 문형의 중요성은 아무리 강조하여도 지나침이 없다.
그러면 어떤 사전이 좋을까.
나는 두산동사의 영한사전과 시사영어사의 영한사전을 참조하였다. 두 가지 다 특징이 다르다. 문형에 관한 설명이 제대로 되어 있는 것이라면 다른 어떤 영한사전이라도 좋다. 그러나 너무 오래된 사전을 피하라. 세월이 흐름에 따라 영어도 많이 변했기 때문이다. 영어수준이 높은 사람도 영어를 국어로 번역하기 위해 영한사전이 반드시 필요하다. 영어로 서신이나 계약서 등을 작성하는 사람은 한영사전도 필요하다.
영영사전은 반드시 필요할까?
영어에 초보인 사람에게는 영영사전은 당장은 무리이나 어느 정도 수준이 향상되면 반드시 하나 정도는 갖추어야 한다. 시중에 나와 있는 것으로 Oxford의 English Dictionary나 Collins의 Cobuild English Dictionary 중 하나를 권한다. 이 둘은 쉬운 단어로 해설이 되어 있고 예문이 풍부하므로 문형에 따른 단어의 의미를 정확히 파악할 수 있음은 물론 영작을 할 때 매우 유용하다.

◇ 영어사전은 문형을 어떻게 나누는가

영어를 배우기 위해서는 사전 찾는 방법부터 알아야 한다. 그러면 영어사전에서는 문형을 어떻게 다루고 있는가?  대부분의 영어사전은 5형식문형을 전제로 하되 문장의 재료에 따라 이를 다시 세분하는 방법을 취하고 있다.

  이처럼 많은 문형을 어떻게 하면 쉽게 터득할 수 있나? 이에 대한 답변이 이 책을 중심을 이루는 테마이다.
문장에는 의미상 끊어 읽을 수 있는 부분이 있다. 이러한 의미 단위에 따라 문장을 분석하면 간단하고 재미있게 문형을 분류할 수 있다. 이러한 의미 단위를 문장의 요소라고 부를 수 있다. 5형식문형은 주어(S), 동사(V), 보어(C), 목적어(O)를  문장의 요소로 본다. 그밖에 부사어(A)를 추가하는 견해도 있다.
부사어(Adverbial)는 종래 수식어(modifier)로 다루어 왔으나 의미단위로 문장을 나누면 당연히 문장의 요소에 들어가게 된다. 부사어는 문장에서 임의적인 대부분이지만 필수적인 것도 있기 때문이다. 부사어를 문장의 요소로 편입시키는 것은 최근 문법이론의 추세이다.
이러한 문장의 요소 중에서 동사(V)와 보어(C)를 묶어 서술어(P)로 하고  주어(S)와 목적어(O)를 명사어(N)로 묶으며 전치사구 또는 부사어(A)는 경우에 따라 N나 P에 배분하면 N과 P로만 이루어진 간명한 2진법문형이 탄생한다.

◇ 문형은 어떻게 터득하나

2진법문형은 문형을 쉽게 터득하기 위한 목적으로 내가 창안한 것이다. 그 원리는 5형식문형을 기본으로 하되 최근에 발전된 문법이론과 우리말 문형을 반영한 것으로 5개의 기본문형을 고안한 것이다.
2진법문형과 5형식문형의 관계를 예를 통해 보면 다음과 같다.

5형식 문형 중 2형식은 be동사와 그 밖의 동사에 따라 둘로 나눌 수 있다. 1형식, 2형식, 3형식에 부사어를 추가하면 여러 개의 문형이 파생된다. 이들을  2진법에 따라 다시 5개의 문형으로 정리한다. 이처럼 간단한 원리로 된 문형이나 그 power는 엄청난 것임을 이 책 전반을 통해 알게 될 것이다.
국어와 영어의 문형은 어순을 제외하고는 문형의 원리는 거의 비슷하다.
왜냐하면 의미 단위는 어느 민족에게든지 공통적이기 때문이다. 다만 달라지는 것은 각 민족에 따라 의미 단위를 배열하는 순서이다. 영어의 경우에는 [NP], [NPN], [NPP], [NPNN], [NPNP]...로 N과 P가 교차로 배열된다. 우리말의 경우에는 [NP], [NNP], [NPP], [NNNP], [NNPP] 처럼 N은 N끼리 모이고 P는 P끼리 모이는 어순을 취한다. 우리말과 영어의 문형의 모든 차이는 이러한 어순에서 비롯된다. 어순의 차이만 확실히 파악하면 문형의 나머지 원리는 쉽게 이해할 수 있다.

우리나라 사람들은 영어와 우리말의 구조가 전혀 별개로 되어 있다고 믿기 때문에 영어를 배우기가 매우 어렵다는 인식에 사로잡혀 있다. 그러나 양국어의 어순의 차이를 확실히 인식하기만 하면 나머지 문제는 그렇게 어려운 문제가 아니다. 영어가 전혀 별개의 것이라는 인식에만 사로잡혀 있으면 영어에 숙달하기가  매우 어렵다. 영어도 노력하면 국어처럼 숙달될 수 있다는 발상의 전환만이 영어에 대한 거리를 좁힐 수 있는 비결이다. 어순이 문제되기는 하나 영어를 접할 때에는 영어의 어순에 따라 우리말을 배열하면 된다. 이 책에서 국역부분을 영어어순에 맞춘 것은 영어식 어순에 숙달하기 위해서이다. 영어문형에 대응한 우리말 표현은 가급적 영어 표현에 가깝게 직역하였는데 이는 국어와 영어의 문형이 잘 대비되도록 하기 위해서이다. 다소 어색한 점이 있더라도 양해하기 바란다.

◇ 2진법으로 영어를 입체적으로 본다

2진법문형을 알면 영어문장이 입체적으로 보인다.
예컨대, "She was crying in the chapel.  그녀는 교회당에서 울고 있었어." 는 (a) She was crying.과  (b) She was in the chapel.의 두 개의 기본문이 겹쳐서 이루어져 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 자동사적 용법의 경우에 뚜렷하게 나타나지만 타동사적 용법의 경우에도 마찬가지이다.

2진법문형을 알면 문장 속의 단어의 뜻을 쉽고 정확하게 파악할 수 있다.
먼저 believe의 예를 본다. 시사영어사 영한사전은 believe vt 믿다, ... 이하는 말을 믿다: - I ~ him. 나는 그가 하는 말을 믿는다(→ believe in). __vi 믿다. 신앙하다...believe in ...의 인격을 믿다, 의 존재를 믿다, 을 좋다고 믿다. : - I believe in him.  나는 그를 신용하고 있다(→ I believe him.)라고 설명한다.
여러분은 위 설명을 보고 I believe him.과 I believe in him.의 용법의 차이를 쉽게 이해할 수 있는가?  "그가 하는 말을 믿는다"와 "그를 신용하고 있다"의 차이는 무엇인가? 사전에 그렇게 되어 있으니 무조건 외울 것인가?  모든 단어를 무조건 외우려고 들면 끝이 없다. 그러나 2진법문형에 의하면 그 의미의 차이를 입체적으로 파악하게 함으로써 이를 쉽게 이해할 수 있다.

(1) I / believe // him.           나는 / 믿어 // 그를.
(2) I / believe / in him.         나는 / 믿어 / 그 안에.

예문 (1)은 NPN 즉 NP+N의 구조이고 (2)는 NPP 즉 N(P₁+P₂)의 구조이다. 즉 (2)는 (2a) "I / believe. 나 / 믿어"와 (2b) "I / am in him. 나 / 그 안에 (있어)."의 두 문장이 합쳐진 문장으로 이해될 수 있다. 따라서 (2)가 (1)에 비해 믿음의 강도가 특별하다는 것을 알 수 있다.

이러한 용법의 차이는 어디서 유래한 것인가? 성경에는 다음의 표현이 있다.

(1) Abram /believed //the Lord, and credited him as righteous.(Ge 15:6)
(2) Then Jesus cried out, "When a man / believes / in me, he / does not        believe / in me only, but / in the one (who has sent me).(Jn 12:44)
(2b) On that day you will realize [that I /am  in my Father, and you
     are / in me, and I / am in you].(Jn 14:20).

대체로 I believe him.의 believe는 일반적인 믿음을 나타냄에 비해 I believe in him.의 believe는 매우 긴밀한 관계에서 이루어지는 특별한 믿음 즉 깊은 신뢰를 나타낸다. 나아가 목적어에 따라 종교적인 신앙, 어떤 주장, 신념 등의 존재에 대한 믿음을 나타내기도 한다. I believe in Jesus. I believe in democracy. I believe in the truth of the theory. 등.
이러한 분석은 trust에 대해서도 마찬가지로 적용된다.
trust v.t. 1. 신뢰하다, 신용하다;... v.i.1. 믿다, 신뢰하다,...등으로 사전의 뜻만으로는 그 구별이 어렵다. 위에서 본 분석과 마찬가지로 신뢰성의 강도에 의해 구별할 수 있다. 이제는 미국 화폐 뒷면에 In God we trust.라고 적힌 표현의 의미를 확실히 이해할 수 있으리라고 본다.

다음은 meet의 용법에 대해서 보기로 하자.
예컨대, (1) I met her.와 (2) I met with her.는 어떻게 구별할 것인가?
두산동아 영한사전은 meet vt. 1. 만나다, (우연히) 마주치다,...vi. 1. 만나다, 마주치다,...라고 하고 있어 엄밀한 구별을 할 수 없게 되어 있다.  숙어란에서  ~ with ...(4) (약속하고) 만나다...등의 특수한 용법이 열거되어 있지만 위 예문에서는 반드시 그러한 의미로 쓰여졌다고 단정할 수 없다. 그러나 문형의 차이에서 구별이 되는 것은 확실하다.

(1) I / met // her.              (2) I / met / with her.

예문 (1)은 나눌 수 없는 NPN문이다. 이에 비해 예문 (2)는 I / met.와 I / was  with her.의 두 문장으로 나눌 수 있는 NPP문이다. 그러므로 (2)는 (1)에 비해 "I / was  with her.라는 내용이 추가되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 즉 (1)에서는 "그녀를 만났어"라는 meet의 일반적 용법으로 쓰인 것에 비해 (2)에서는 "그녀와 함께 (있었어)"라는 점을 강조하는 특별한 용법으로 쓰인 것을 알 수 있다.  이처럼 문장을 의미 단위로 끊는 것은 영화대사에서 쉽게 볼 수 있다.

You belong here...  With me.  너는 여기 속해... 나와 함께.

위 문장은 영화 The Truman Show에서 Show를 총지휘하는 Christof가 영화 막판에서 Truman에게 섬에서 머무르도록 설득하는 장면에서 나온다.
이 문장은 다음과 같이 끊거나 합칠 수 있다.

(a) You / belong / here.  NPP     너는 여기 속해.
(b) You / are with me.    NP      너는 나와 함께 있어.
(c) You / belong / here / with me. NPPP 너는 나와 함께 여기 속해.

끝으로 I was caught red-handed cheating on the test.에 대해 본다.
영한사전에 의하면 red-handed  adj. adv. 1. 피투성이의 손을 한(하고) 2. 현행범의(으로)"로 되어 있다. 따라서 2.의 설명으로 위 문장을 이해하면 된다. 이 문장은 서술어의 숫자에 따라 여러 개의 기본문으로 나눌 수 있다.

(a) I / was caught       NP       나 / 잡혔어.
(b) I / was red-handed   NP       나 / 현장에.
(c) I / was cheating     NP       나 / 커닝했어.
(d) I / was on the test. NP       나 / 시험 중이었어.

이를 크게 둘로 묶으면 다음과 같이 된다.

(e) I / was caught / red-handed.    NPP   나 / 잡혔어 / 현장에.
(f) I / was cheating / on the test. NPP   나 / 커닝했어 / 시험 중에

마지막으로 이를 하나의 문장으로 모으면 다음과 같이 된다.

I / was caught / red-handed /  cheating  / on the test.  NPPP
나 / 잡혔어    / 현장에     /  커닝하면서 / 시험 중에.
